What is Kosi Bay?

Kosi Bay is one of South Africa’s most breathtaking and least-discovered destinations — a pristine wilderness at the far northern tip of KwaZulu-Natal, just 2 kilometres from the Mozambique border. Part of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kosi Bay is made up of four interconnected lakes, winding channels, raffia palm forests, mangroves, and one of the quietest, most unspoilt stretches of beach on the entire African coastline.

A Lake System Like No Other

The Kosi Bay lake system consists of four interlinked lakes — Nhlange, Mpungwini, Makhawulani, and the estuary mouth — connected by a network of reed-lined channels and swamp habitats that stretch all the way to the Indian Ocean. Loggerhead and leatherback sea turtles return to Kosi Bay’s beaches each summer (October to March) to lay their eggs — it is one of Africa’s most important turtle nesting sites. Hippos and crocodiles move through the lake channels, while bull sharks are known to patrol the estuary.

Over 1 000 Years of Thonga Culture

Kosi Bay is the ancestral home of the Thonga (Tsonga) people, who have lived in harmony with this ecosystem for over a millennium. Their ancient fish traps, known as utshwayelo, are one of Africa’s most remarkable examples of sustainable living — carefully hand-built from reeds and wooden stakes, passed down through generations for more than 700 years. The name of our lodge — Utshwayelo — honours this extraordinary tradition and our ongoing relationship with the local Thonga community.

A Birder’s Paradise

With over 250 recorded bird species, Kosi Bay is one of KwaZulu-Natal’s premier birding destinations. Highlight species include the rare Palmnut Vulture, the elusive Pel’s Fishing Owl, the White-backed Night Heron, and a spectacular variety of kingfishers, herons, and waders.

Getting to Kosi Bay

The nearest town is Manguzi (eMangusi), approximately 13 kilometres away. A 4×4 vehicle is required to reach Kosi Bay Mouth, and guests must obtain an iSimangaliso Wetland Park entry permit at the gate. Durban Airport is the most practical entry point for fly-in visitors, with the drive taking approximately 4 to 4.5 hours via the N2 north.
